Strobilites was named by Lindley and Hutton (1833). It is not extant. Its type is Strobilites elongata.

It was assigned to Coniferales by Berry (1914), Knowlton (1919), Andrews (1970), Lakhanpal et al. (1976) and Chandra and Tewari (1991).
