Taxonomy
Pongo was named by Lacépède (1799) [non Pongo Haeckel 1866]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Ponginae by Pilbeam et al. (1977); to Pongini by Andrews (1992) and Cameron (1997); to Pongidae by Andrews and Cronin (1982) and McKenna and Bell (1997); and to Hominoidea by Zalmout et al. (2010).
