Megistotherium was named by Savage (1973). It is not extant.
It was assigned to Hyaenodontidae by McKenna and Bell (1997) and Morales et al. (2008); to Hyainailourinae by Morlo et al. (2007) and Solé et al. (2014); and to Hyainailourinae by Borths and Stevens (2017).
