Dictyophyton was named by Hall (1863) [Sepkoski's age data: S Ludl-u D Fras]. It is not extant. Its type is Dictyophyton newberryi.

It was assigned to Problematica by Andrews (1970); to Reticulosa by Sepkoski (2002); and to Prismodictyinae by Finks and Rigby (2004).
