Taxonomy

Proviverra was named by Rütimeyer (1862). It is not extant. It is the type genus of Proviverrinae.

It was assigned to Oxyaenidae by Cope (1880) and Cope (1880); to Proviverridae by Scott (1892) and Hay (1902); to Hyaenodontinae by Van Valen (1967); to Hyaenodontidae by Rutimeyer (1862), McKenna and Bell (1997) and Solé et al. (2009); and to Proviverrinae by Peigné et al. (2007), Solé (2013), Solé et al. (2014) and Solé and Mennecart (2019).

Synonyms

Prorhyzaena was named by Rutimeyer (1891). It is not extant.

It was synonymized subjectively with Miacis by Simpson (1945); it was synonymized subjectively with Proviverra by Dawson (1980).

It was assigned to Miacidae by Peterson (1919); and to Hyaenodontidae by Flynn and Galiano (1982).
Geiselotherium was named by Matthes (1952). It is not extant. Its type is Geiselotherium pilzi.

It was synonymized subjectively with Proviverra by Van Valen (1967).

It was assigned to Hyaenodontidae by Matthes (1952).

Matthes 1952 (Geiselotherium)	The anterior P without big diastemas; lower M2,3 equal in length, trigonid of lower M3 higher than that of lower M2; lower P4 without cutting talonid; lower P1 has two roots; relative small (lower M1-3 19 mm); talonids basin-like, does not take part in cutting; metaconids not very small; molars not tight together; P not reduced and not tight; lower P4 has two roots, biggest tooth of P; cusps of triconids pointed; paraconid higher than metaconid; lower M1-3 with metaconids; talonid of lower M3 not reduced to small cusp; trigonids of molars well developed, not low.
