Dictyorhabdus was named by Walcott (1892) [Sepkoski's age data: O Cara-l]. Its type is Palaechimaera prisca.

It was assigned to Chimaeridae by Hay (1902); to Metazoa by Sansom et al. (2001); to Reticulosa by Sepkoski (2002); and to Dictyospongiinae by Finks and Rigby (2004).
