Pyrocyon was named by Gingerich and Deutsch (1989). It is not extant. Its type is Pyrocyon dioctetus.
It was assigned to Hyaenodontidae by Gingerich and Deutsch (1989) and Gunnell (1998); and to Sinopaninae by Solé (2013) and Solé et al. (2014).
