Thinocyon was named by Marsh (1872).

It was synonymized subjectively with Limnocyon by Wortman (1902).

It was assigned to Miacidae by Scott (1892); to Uintacyonidae by Hay (1902); to Limnocyonini by Van Valen (1967); to Limnocyonidae by Marsh (1872), Matthew (1909), Gazin (1976), Gunnell (1998) and Morlo et al. (2000); and to Limnocyoninae by Morlo and Gunnell (2005), Solé (2013) and Borths et al. (2016).

hypercarnivore (Morlo and Gunnell 2005) with a postcranial skeleton that has "remarkable similarity" to Mustela vison, which is ground dwelling and partially aquatic (Gebo and Rose 1993)g
