Ambloctonus was named by Cope (1875). Its type is Ambloctonus sinosus. It is the type genus of Amblyctonidae.
It was assigned to Creodonta by Cope (1875); to Hyaenodontidae by Cope (1875); to Amblyctonidae by Cope (1880) and Cope (1880); to Palaeonictidae by Scott (1892); to Ambloctonidae by Hay (1902); to Oxyaenidae by Gunnell (1998); and to Palaeonictinae by Van Valen (1967) and Chester et al. (2010).
