It was assigned to Viverrina by Gray (1825); to Viverrinae by Mivart (1882), Hendey (1974), Ginsburg (1977) and Wilson and Reeder (2005); to Viverridae by Kurten (1968), Carroll (1988), Geraads (1997), Gaubert et al. (2004) and Werdelin and Peigne (2010); to Carnivora by Silcox et al. (2010); and to Genettinae by Burgin et al. (2018).
