Leopardus was named by Gray (1842). It is extant.
It was synonymized subjectively with Felis by Cabrera (1958).
It was assigned to Felinae by Wilson and Reeder (2005), Johnson et al. (2006) and Breitenmoser and Breitenmoser (2017); and to Felidae by Wilson and Reeder (1993), Salles et al. (2006) and Albright et al. (2019).
