It was synonymized subjectively with Pomatotherium by Hay (1902).

It was assigned to Mustelidae by Cope (1890) and Carroll (1988); to Semantoridae by Sato et al. (2009); and to Oligobuninae by Baskin (1998) and Baskin (2017).
