Mesocyon was named by Scott (1890). It is not extant.

It was synonymized subjectively with Enhydrocyon by Swisher (1982).

It was assigned to Caninae by Hay (1902); to Canidae by Scott (1890), Carroll (1988) and Stevens (1991); and to Hesperocyoninae by Wang (1994), Wang et al. (2008) and Wang and Tedford (2008).
