Sunkahetanka was named by Macdonald (1963). It is not extant.

It was synonymized subjectively with Enhydrocyon by Swisher (1982).

It was assigned to Canidae by Macdonald (1963) and Carroll (1988); and to Hesperocyoninae by Wang (1994), Wang and Tedford (1996) and Wang et al. (2008).
