It was synonymized subjectively with Tomarctus by Matthew (1924), Bode (1935), Stirton (1940), Green (1948) and Webb (1969).
It was assigned to Canidae by Merriam (1906) and Munthe (1998); to Borophagini by Wang et al. (1999); and to Cynarctina by Wang et al. (2008).
