Pseudocyon was named by Lartet (1851) [type European P. sansaniensis]. It is not extant.

It was assigned to Canidae by Bourguignat (1875); to Amphicyoninae by Hunt (1998); and to Amphicyonidae by Lartet (1851), Carroll (1988) and Pickford et al. (2000).
