Parictis was named by Scott (1893). It is not extant. Its type is Parictis primaevus.

It was considered a nomen dubium by Baskin and Tedford (1996).

It was assigned to Mustelinae by Hay (1902); to Ursidae by Scott (1893) and Carroll (1988); to Phocoidea by McKenna and Bell (1997); and to Amphicynodontinae by Hunt (1998).
