Psygmophyllum was named by Schimper (1870). It is not extant. Its type is Noeggerathia flabellata.

It was assigned to Plantae by Andrews (1970); and to Ginkgophyta by Lakhanpal et al. (1976) and Chandra and Tewari (1991).
