Taxonomy
Apletotomeus was named by Reeder (1960). It is not extant. Its type is Apletotomeus crassus.

It was synonymized subjectively with Heliscomys by Black (1965); it was synonymized subjectively with Proheteromys by Wood (1980).

It was assigned to Heliscomyidae by Korth et al. (1991); and to Protrogomorpha by Reeder (1960), Korth (1989), Korth (1994), Korth (1997) and McKenna and Bell (1997).
