Pseudotomus was named by Cope (1872).

It was synonymized subjectively with Plesiarctomys by Cope (1881); it was synonymized subjectively with Paramys by Roger (1896) and Hay (1902); it was reranked as Paramys (Pseudotomus) by Matthew (1910).

It was assigned to Paramys by Matthew (1910); to Manitshinae by Wood (1962); to Ischyromyidae by Cope (1872), Wilson (1940) and McKenna and Bell (1997); and to Manitshini by Korth (1985) and Dunn and Rasmussen (2007).
