Taxonomy
Mesogaulus was named by Riggs (1899). It is not extant. Its type is Mesogaulus paniensis.

It was assigned to Mylagaulidae by Riggs (1899), Hay (1902) and McKenna and Bell (1997); and to Mylagaulinae by Lu et al. (2016).
