Diagnosis
ReferenceDiagnosis
H. de Bruijn and P. Mein 1968Skull: Infra-orbital foramen large, oval and reaching zygomatic plate. Infra-orbital canal absent. Angle between zygomatic plate and the plane of the occlusal surface of the upper-dentition 40 degrees (angle between basicranial axis and zygomatic plate cannot be measured owing to the absence of the occipital). Interorbital region narrow. Two depressions posterior to incisors for attachment of cheek pouch musculature. The suture between the premaxilla and the maxilla is bending posteriorly opposite the infra-orbital foramen.
Mandible: The anterior end of the mandible is level with the alveolar border. Diastemal portions of mandible long and shallow. The masseteric fossa ends below the anterior roots of m1, its lower limit is straight. The dorsal limit of the condyloid porcess is situated only just above the level of the occlusal surface of the lower cheek teeth.
Upper dentition: Occlusal surface of M1-2 sub-quadrate. Protoloph and metaloph converge toward the protocone. The metaloph is slightly constricted at the protocone, mesostyls small or absent. The striated laterally compressed upper incisers are acutely curved (ophistodont).
Lower dentition: Entoconids indistinct and incorporated in posterolophids. Postero-internal corner of m1-2 rounded. m1-2 not compressed in early species, somewhat compressed in S. turolensis. Protoconid separated from anterolophid in m1-2. Mesoconids prominent in m1, m2 and m3. Mesostylids small or absent. Anterior surface of lower incisers striated.
