Castoroides was named by Foster (1838). Its type is Castoroides ohioensis. It is the type genus of Castoroidinae, Castoroidini.
It was assigned to Rodentia by Foster (1838) and Leidy (1860); to Castoroididae by Hay (1902); to Castoroidinae by Rybczynski (2007); to Castoroidini by Korth (2008); and to Castoridae by Wilson (1967), Martin (1969), Kurten and Anderson (1980), McKenna and Bell (1997), Eshelman et al. (2018) and Albright et al. (2019).
