Propalaeocastor was named by Borisoglebskaya (1967). It is not extant. Its type is Propalaeocastor kazachstanicus.
It was assigned to Castorinae by Wu et al. (2004); and to Castoridae by McKenna and Bell (1997) and Bendukidze et al. (2009).
