Taxonomy
Steneofiber was named by Geoffroy (1833). It is not extant. It was considered monophyletic by Rybczynski (2007).

It was synonymized subjectively with Castor by Cope (1881).

It was assigned to Castoridae by Geoffroy (1833), Hay (1902), McKenna and Bell (1997) and Sach and Heizmann (2001); and to Castorinae by Rybczynski (2007).
