Aztecia mahalae
Taxonomy
Aztecia mahalae was named by Johanson and Ahlberg (2001) [A small rhizodont, diVers from all other rhizodonts in possessing a narrow, only slightly recessed flange along the posteriormargin of the dorsal lamina of the cleithrum (all known Carboniferous rhizodonts have a broad mesially deflected flange in this position, while Gooloogongia has a simple cleithral margin with no flange). DiVers from all other rhizodonts, but similar to holotype of Sauripteris taylori in possessing a humerus with a wide preaxial flange.]. Its type specimen is AMF113914, a set of postcrania (partim AMF54333; associated humerus, clavicle and cleithrum, the latter two being incomplete), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Young et al 1992 Devonian Fish Locality 15, which is in a Givetian marine horizon in the Aztec Silstone Formation of Antarctica.
