Schaubeumys was named by Wood (1935). It is not extant.

It was synonymized subjectively with Plesiosminthus by Wilson (1960), Sutton (1972), Storer (1975), Reynolds (1991) and Green (1992).

It was assigned to Sicistinae by Korth (1987); and to Zapodidae by Wood (1935), Black (1958), Green (1977), Engesser (1979), Korth (1980), Barnosky (1986), Skwara (1988), Korth (1992), Korth (1994) and McKenna and Bell (1997).
