Cricetus was named by Leske (1779) [attributed by Allen 1895 to Kerr 1792 (apparently in error)]. It is extant. Its type is Cricetus cricetus.
It was assigned to Murina by Illiger (1811); to Cricetina by Gray (1825); to Cricetini by Baskin (1978); and to Cricetidae by McKenna and Bell (1997).
