Neocometes was named by Schaub and Zapfe (1953). It is not extant.
It was assigned to Cricetidae by de Bruijn and Moltzer (1974) and McKenna and Bell (1997); and to Platacanthomyidae by Kowalski (1993) and Mein and Ginsburg (1997).
