Prosomys was named by Shotwell (1956). It is not extant.

It was synonymized subjectively with Promimomys by Repenning (1968) and Hibbard (1970).

It was assigned to Cricetidae by Shotwell (1956), Voorhies (1990), McKenna and Bell (1997) and Chaline et al. (1999).
