Conoteuthis cantiana was named by Spath (1939). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is East-ware Bay, Folkestone, which is in an Albian marine siliciclastic in the Gault Formation of the United Kingdom.
It was recombined as Pavloviteuthis cantiana by Jeletzky (1981) and Fuchs (2019).
