Gaudeamus was named by Wood (1968). It is not extant. Its type is Gaudeamus aegyptius. It was considered monophyletic by Wood (1968).
It was assigned to Phiomyidae by McKenna and Bell (1997); to Thryonomyidae by López-Antoñazas and Sen (2005); to Hystricognathi by Wood (1968) and Coster et al. (2010); and to Gaudeamuridae by Sallam et al. (2011).
