Stichomys was named by Ameghino (1887). It is not extant.

It was assigned to Echinomyidae by Ameghino (1891); to Adelphomyinae by Patterson and Pascual (1968) and Kramarz (2004); to Echimyidae by McKenna and Bell (1997), Carvalho and Salles (2004) and Verzi et al. (2014); and to Octodontoidea by Arnal and Vucetich (2015) and Vizcaíno et al. (2022).
