Scleromys was named by Ameghino (1887). It is not extant. Its type is Scleromys angustus.

It was assigned to Echinomyidae by Ameghino (1891); to Dasyproctidae by McKenna and Bell (1997); and to Dinomyidae by Fields (1957) and Kramarz (2006).
