Taxonomy
Brachylagus was named by Lyon (1904) [named as a subgenus of Lepus by Miller 1900; raised to genus level]. It is extant. Its type is Brachylagus idahoensis.

It was synonymized subjectively with Sylvilagus by Grinnell et al. (1930), Orr (1940), Durant (1952) and Miller (1976).

It was assigned to Leporinae by Dawson (1958) and Kurten and Anderson (1980); and to Leporidae by Lyon (1904), Kenner (1965), Corbet (1983), Halanych and Robinson (1997), McKenna and Bell (1997), Ramos (1999) and Ramos (1999).
