Oryctolagus was named by Lilljeborg (1874). It is extant.

It was reranked as Lepus (Oryctolagus) by Boule and De Villeneuve (1927).

It was assigned to Lepus by Boule and De Villeneuve (1927); to Leporinae by Dawson (1958); and to Leporidae by Capasso Barbato and Gliozzi (1995), Worthy (1997) and McKenna and Bell (1997).
