Ampliconus was named by Eberle and Lillegraven (1998) [unpublished name of Middleton 1983; accidental validation]. It is not extant. Its type is Ampliconus browni.
It was assigned to Periptychidae by Eberle and Lillegraven (1998), McComas and Eberle (2016) and Atteberry and Eberle (2021).
