Mithrandir was named by Cifelli (1983) [named as subgenus of Anisonchus by Van Valen 1978; raised to genus level]. It is not extant.

It was assigned to Periptychidae by Cifelli (1983), Eberle and Lillegraven (1998), McComas and Eberle (2016) and Atteberry and Eberle (2021).
