Proectocion was named by Ameghino (1904). Its type is Proectocion argentinus.

It was assigned to Hyracotheriidae by Ameghino (1904); to Didolodidae by Scott (1913); to Adianthidae by Cifelli (1983); and to Didolodontidae by Simpson (1948), Paula Couto (1952) and Carroll (1988).

Synonyms

Oxybunotherium was named by Pascual (1965). Its type is Oxybunotherium praecursor. It was considered unknown by Pascual (1965).

It was synonymized subjectively with Proectocion by Cifelli (1983).

It was assigned to Didolodontidae by Pascual (1965) and Carroll (1988).

R. Pascual 1965 (Oxybunotherium)	Molares inferiores bunodontes, con las cúspides bien prominentes y sus ápices bien separados; corona mesodonta; paracónido ausente; trigónido poco más elevado que el talónido, con el metacónido más alto que el protocónido; metalófido relativamente alto; anterolófido presente, con una pequeña cúspide por delante del protocónido, y además un pequeño cíngulo anterior independiente; crista obliqua sin mesocónido, conectada al metalófido a la altura del metacónido; entocónido bien separado del hipoconúlido; hipoconúlido del m3 tendiendo a separarse en un lóbulo posterior.
