Hexacodus was named by Gazin (1952). It is not extant. Its type is Hexacodus pelodes.
It was synonymized subjectively with Sarcolemur by Guthrie (1971); it was synonymized subjectively with Protodichobune by Van Valen (1971).
It was assigned to Bunomerycidae by Gentry and Hooker (1988); to Homacodontini by McKenna and Bell (1997); to Artiodactyla by Gazin (1952), Krishtalka and Stucky (1986), Carroll (1988) and Walsh (2000); and to Homacodontidae by Theodor et al. (2007).
