Taxonomy
Sus was named by Linnaeus (1758). It is extant. It is the type genus of Suoidea, Suidae, Suinae.
It was assigned to Bestiae by Linnaeus (1758); to Suina by Gray (1825); to Artiodactyla by Owen (1848); to Pachydermata by Leidy (1860); to Suini by McKenna and Bell (1997); to Suinae by Hay (1902) and Funk et al. (2007); and to Suidae by Leakey (1943), Carroll (1988), Capasso Barbato and Gliozzi (1995), Thewissen et al. (2001) and Agnarsson and May-Collado (2008).
