Pecari was named by Reichenbach (1835). It is extant.

It was assigned to Tayassuinae by Boisserie et al. (2005); to Tayassuidae by Reichenbach (1835), Wilson and Reeder (1993), Agnarsson and May-Collado (2008) and Hulbert et al. (2009); and to Tayassuini by Dutra et al. (2017).
