Agriochoerus was named by Leidy (1850).

It was assigned to Agriochoerinae by Hay (1902); to Oreodontidae by Leidy (1873), Cope (1884) and Scott (1913); and to Agriochoeridae by Leidy (1869), Lambe (1908), Matthew (1908), Scott (1940), Ferrusquia-Villafranca (1969), Carroll (1988), McKenna and Bell (1997), Theodor (1999) and Thewissen et al. (2001).
