Belemnosidae was named by Wiltshire (1869). It is not extant. Its type is Belemnosis.

It was corrected as Belemnoseidae by Jeletzky (1966) and Doyle et al. (1994).

It was assigned to Sepiida by Jeletzky (1966); and to Spirulida by Doyle et al. (1994).
