Taxonomy
Balanocrinus africanus was named by Peron (1889).

It was recombined as Pentacrinus (Balanocrinus) africanus by Oppenheim (1902); it was recombined as Isselicrinus africanus by Rasmussen (1961) and Schulz (1983).
