Taxonomy
Palaeomeryx was named by von Meyer (1834). It is not extant. Its type is Palaeomeryx kaupi.

It was assigned to Cervulinae by Hay (1902); to Palaeomerycinae by Matthew (1904) and Prothero and Liter (2007); and to Palaeomerycidae by Carroll (1988), Sach and Heizmann (2001) and Sánchez et al. (2015).
