It was reranked as Antilope (Dama) by Bennett (1833); it was reranked as Cervus (Dama) by Boule and De Villeneuve (1927).

It was assigned to Cervina by Gray (1825); to Antilope by Bennett (1833); to Cervus by Boule and De Villeneuve (1927); to Cervidae by Carroll (1988) and Capasso Barbato and Gliozzi (1995); to Cervinae by Hay (1902) and Agnarsson and May-Collado (2008); and to Cervini by Grubb (2000) and Mackiewicz et al. (2022).
