Elaphurus was named by Milne-Edwards (1866). It is extant.
It was reranked as Cervus (Elaphurus) by Teilhard de Chardin and Piveteau (1930) and Pitra et al. (2004); it was synonymized subjectively with Cervus by Hassanin et al. (2012).
It was assigned to Cervidae by Carroll (1988); to Cervus by Teilhard de Chardin and Piveteau (1930) and Pitra et al. (2004); to Cervinae by Agnarsson and May-Collado (2008); and to Cervini by Grubb (2000) and Mackiewicz et al. (2022).
