Hydaspitherium was named by Lydekker (1878). It is not extant. Its type is Hydaspitherium megacephalum.
It was assigned to Sivatheridae by Lydekker (1878) and Lydekker (1880); to Giraffidae by Carroll (1988); and to Sivatheriinae by Kahn et al. (2010).
