Protacanthodiscus crossi was named by Anderson (1945). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is CAS loc. 28667, McCarthy Creek, 3 miles northwest of Paskenta, which is in a Berriasian marine horizon in California.
It was recombined as Neocosmoceras crossi by Imlay and Jones (1970).
